Current TESL Students


Students are encouraged to attend conferences, lectures, and Brown Bag seminars as part of their professional development. There are many events throughout the year, both on campus and off, details of which will be distributed by course instructors and via the TESL listserv.

Conferences and Lectures

ATESL (Alberta Teachers of English as a Second Language) holds an annual conference in October/November. This conference provides excellent opportunities for presenting, volunteering and networking. Local ATESL groups have regular meetings. More details can be found on the ATESL web site.

Brown Bags

Throughout the year, the TESL program holds several Brown Bag seminars. Topics vary; an annual forum is held on employment opportunities in ESL schools and programs.

Master's Students

RAs and TAs

You may receive research or teaching assistantships as a graduate student. Priority will be given to second year continuing students. Thus we suggest you contact the Administrative Assistant/HR at (780) 492-5245 as soon as possible to apply. An application form will be distributed at the end of March to all continuing students who have a mailbox on the 6th floor student mailroom (6-143). Maintaining Registration

Course-based Master's students must register for at minimum a 3-credit course in the program once per calendar year. That is, students need to register for a term and pay fees whether they take courses or not. Otherwise, the student's registration in the program will lapse and the students will be required to apply for re-admission.

Applying to Graduate

At the completion of the program, students must apply online to graduate. Students must initiate the process by applying on Bear Tracks under the 'Academics' icon. More information can be found in the TESL student handbook.

Student Activities

TESL Students' Group

All students who enroll in TESL programs automatically become members of the TESL Students' Group. The TESL Students' Group provides support for professional development and organizes social events to help foster a sense of community in the TESL program and TESL profession.

The TESL Students' Group applies for funding to bring in guest speakers. Through grants from the Graduate Students' Association and other fundraising efforts, the TESL group have sponsored visits from leading researchers in the TESL/SLA field.

In 2005, the TESL Students' Group established a web site TESL Students' Group. The web site has details of social events and information for professional development, along with campus resource links.

Student Activities

Many of the TESL students are active participants and executive members of the Edmonton local, of the Alberta Teachers of English as a Second Language (ATESL), and several have made presentations at ESL conferences. Some students also present at TESL Canada, the Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics, TESOL, and American Association of Applied Linguisitics conferences. Several TESL students have chosen to publish work from their final projects in venues such as the ATESL Newsletter, the Canadian Modern Language Review, the TESOL Journal, and the TESL Canada Journal. Some students have been involved in faculty research, and others have been employed through departmental research assistantships and teaching assistantships. There are many ESL schools in Edmonton where TESL students volunteer and gain further teaching experience.

After the Program

Graduates of the TESL program have found employment in a variety of areas. Naturally, many have chosen to teach ESL here in Canada, and many former students are currently teaching in EAP, LINC, and other specialized programs. Others have become directors of ESL programs and settlement services. Some graduates travel overseas or return to their native countries to teach EFL.

Not all TESL graduates move directly into ESL/EFL schools. Some former students are involved in testing and research. Others have used their TESL background to obtain positions in tangential areas, such as vocational training. And finally, some of our students have chosen to pursue academic study in PhD programs.
